Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Sun Microsystems provides a service called in.rwhod in the Solaris operating system line of products. The service is responsible for maintaining a database to be used by the "rwho" and "ruptime" processes by exchanging status information with other similar services running on other hosts on the network. The in.rwhod service sends and receives statistics on the currently logged in users, system update, and system load information. A vulnerability exists within the in.rwhod daemon component of Sun Solaris. The daemon can potentially be exploited from a remote host to be compromised for code injection and execution. This vulnerability may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable host within the security context of the root user. In a simple attack case, the daemon process will terminate unexpectedly. The compromised system will not send or receive rwho updates over network. In the more sophisticated case of a code injection and execution attack the behaviour of the host is entirely dependent on the intent of the injected code. |
