Vulnerability Description | The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) defines a file format intended for the on-line transmission and interchange of raster graphic data. It uses the LZW compression algorithm to minimize file sizes. A double free vulnerability exists in the way Microsoft Internet Explorer handles images of the GIF file format. This vulnerability can be exploited by enticing a user to view a web page or email message containing a specially crafted .gif file. Successful exploitation can lead to a client compromise and possible remote code execution. When the vulnerable target is attacked, the vulnerable program, used to browse the crafted GIF file, will crash, creating a denial of service condition. Depending on the current setting, it may automatically restart itself. In the case of a successful code execution attack, the actual behavior will depend on the intention of the attacker. |
