Vulnerability Description | The Mozilla web browser and its derivatives, Firefox, Netscape, and K-Meleon are applications designed for tasks related to browsing the web, such as displaying HTML encoded pages, downloading files, etc. These applications have a built in functionality to interpret JavaScript code. One of the features implemented in JavaScript is string parsing using regular expressions. In particular, JavaScript is capable of doing regular expression based pattern matching and substitution. A vulnerability exists in the JavaScript interpreter of the Mozilla web browser and its derivatives. The flaw is triggered when a specially constructed web page calls a certain function with specially crafted parameters. This vulnerability can be exploited to retrieve arbitrary information from heap memory. The target system will generally not exhibit any unusual behaviour as a result of a successful attack. An attack intending to collect information about a vulnerable system will generally transpire in a silent manner. In rare cases, the affected application may terminate unexpectedly as a result of an attack under certain circumstances. |
