Security Gateway |
Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) standard defines specifications for the representation of domain names containing non-ASCII characters. The IDN standard has been developed to allow representation of Unicode domain names without depending on alterations to any network infrastructure components such as DNS. The specification uses ASCII characters to represent encoded Unicode characters found in the domain name. An IDN converted name begins with a special prefix xn-- followed by the encoded domain name. There exists heap-based buffer overflow in the Mozilla web browser and its derivatives. The flaw is caused by improper handling of the domain name field in IDN URLs. An attacker may exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code in the security context of the logged in user. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the affected web browser will terminate. In a more sophisticated attack scenario, where the malicious user is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behaviour of the system is dependent on the nature the injected code. Any injected code would execute in the security context of the currently logged in user. |
