Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine product is a virus scanning engine that may be used by third party applications. The product can accept virus scanning requests submitted by external applications. An application may pass files to the engine to scan for known virus patterns and receive the file back cleaned, if it was infected. The product is fully configurable through an HTTP based interface. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the way Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine Administrative Web Interface processes HTTP requests. This issue is caused by insufficient validation performed on the HTTP header fields. This vulnerability can be exploited to execute arbitrary code on the target system with System privileges. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the affected service will not terminate but rather will stop responding to subsequent requests. Note that the web service port will not accept any request until the service is restarted. In a more sophisticated attack scenario, where the malicious user is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behaviour of the system is dependent on the nature of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component will execute in the security context of the service process, normally System level. |
