Vulnerability Description | The Microsoft Windows operating system provides a facility to create soft links to files on the file system which are referred to as shortcuts. A shortcut file may be created for any kind of file, binary executables, text files, or any other miscellaneous file types. Shortcut files are created with the lnk file extension. A vulnerability exists in several versions of the Microsoft Windows Shell component. The vulnerability is created by a lack of user input verification checks by the affected component. Exploitation of this vulnerability may allow an attacker to divert the process flow of the vulnerable process. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the Windows system will shut down. The system must be restarted manually in order for functionality to be resumed. In a more sophisticated attack scenario, where the malicious user is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behavior of the system is dependent on the nature the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component will execute in the security context of System. |
