Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The EMC Retrospect Backup product suite is based on an agent and server model. The backup server can initiate backups, backup remote client machine, as well perform scheduled backups. The agent component is installed on a machine that is to be backed up by the server. The agent can be made to initiate backups by contacting the server and requesting operations to be performed, or it can be contacted by the server for server initiated backup operations. A Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability exists in the EMC Retrospect Backup agent. This vulnerability is a result of improper handling of specially crafted packets. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability to cause the application to terminate, preventing the backups from occurring on that system. Upon processing the crafted message, the Retrospect Backup client agent process terminates. A Retrospect Backup server can no longer connect to the target and perform backup operations. The affected service must be restarted to resume functionality. |
