Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The SUSE Enterprise Linux Server is an operating system designed for medium to large organizations. It contains numerous server components which are operational in default installation of the system. The server may optionally be controlled remotely through a web interface provided by the Novell Remote Manager server (NRM). The NRM functionality is provided through the Novel Small HTTP Interface service. A heap based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Remote Manager. The vulnerability is caused by insufficient verification of parameters passed to the server in the context of an HTTP session. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this flaw to inject and execute arbitrary code on the target system. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the affected Enterprise Server Remote Manager HTTP daemon will terminate. Note that the service must be restarted manually, as it leaves a lock file which must be manually removed before the service can run. In a sophisticated attack scenario where the malicious user is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behaviour of the system is dependent on the nature of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the affected Enterprise Server Remote Manager HTTP daemon, which is usually root.
