Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The EMC Retrospect suite is a system designed to automate backup operations in an enterprise environment. The system is comprised of a server and multiple clients, also known as agents. The server initiates operations on the client, including backup of the files, clock synchronization, and various other functions. The EMC Retrospect Client can also initiate a backup or restore operation by request from the server. To facilitate this, the client always listens for connections on port 497/TCP. Note that Client and Server refer to the EMC Retrospect Client product and the EMC Retrospect Server product and should not be confused with client and server in the server-client networking model. This is due to the fact that in this scenario, the Client product listens for incoming connections and the Server product initiates communication. For this reason this protection is in fact a Server protection. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in EMC Restrospect Client product. The flaw is caused by a boundary error in the handling of crafted packets sent to the Client service port of the target. An unauthenticated remote attacker may leverage this vulnerability to inject and execute arbitrary code through triggering a buffer overflow. Any code execution will be in the security context of Client service process, System on windows platforms. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the target application will terminate immediately. On windows platform, the EMC Retrospect Client service will not resume until the Client service is restarted manually. In a sophisticated attack scenario where the attacker is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behaviour of the system is dependent on the nature the injected code. On windows platforms, any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the EMC Retrospect Client service process, normally System. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability
