Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The Symantec VERITAS NetBackup server product suite is an enterprise backup system solution available for various platforms. It is capable of performing scheduled automatic backups as well as manual backups invoked by a client. A minimal backup environment consists of backup agents and a master backup server. The backup server serves as a single management tool that helps to consolidate all backup and recovery operations. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the Symantec VERITAS NetBackup products. The flaw is due to insufficient boundary protection in the processing of volume manager communications. An attacker may leverage this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the target host with System privileges. In a simple attack case, the vulnerable VERITAS volume manager daemon service will terminate, causing a denial of service condition. The service must be manually restarted after such an attack in order to restore functionality. In a more sophisticated attack, involving code injection, arbitrary code is executed in the security context of the System account. In such a case, the behaviour of the target is dependent on the nature of the injected code. |
