Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | MySQL is a popular open-source implementation of a relational database that supports the Structured Query Language (SQL) for querying and updating stored data. Communication with the database occurs by using the MySQL protocol. As with other database implementations, MySQL has a number of built-in SQL functions that are designed to assist the user with the task of querying and updating the database. There exists a denial of service vulnerability in the MySQL database server. The problem is caused by an incorrect handling of the arguments passed to the built-in SQL function DATE_FORMAT, which causes the application to terminate. A remote authenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to cause a denial of service condition on the target server. In an unsuccessful attack scenario, the database server will continue to operate normally, however, a potentially malformed warning message may be logged. In a successful attack scenario, the affected service will terminate. Note that on Linux and Unix-based systems, the service will be restarted immediately, whereas on Windows-based systems, this is not the default case. Regardless, all transactions and network connections to the server present at the time of termination will shut down. |
