Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Linux is a popular open-source operating system in which the kernel and other programs related to the operating systems are developed by a group of volunteers. The Linux kernel supports a packet filtering/manipulating framework known as Netfilter. Netfilter is used to monitor, inspect, manipulate network packets that received by a Linux-based computer. Netfilter is capable to process various IP-based protocols, such as TCP, UDP, FTP, SNMP, etc. There exists a remote denial of service vulnerability in the Linux Kernel. The vulnerability occurs due to insufficient checks during the processing of SNMP packets by the netfilter module. By sending a crafted SNMP packet to a target host, an attacker may exploit this vulnerability to cause a double free error in the Linux Kernel; thus, creating a system wide denial of service condition. Exploiting this vulnerability successfully will cause a kernel panic condition on the target system. The kernel will log a panic message on the system console containing debug information pertaining to the panic condition which includes the call trace, register values and so on. The target host must be restarted to resume its functionality. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
