Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Internet Explorer is the most widely used web browser application. The browser is capable of processing HTML, images, scripting languages, and various other popular Internet specifications. The browser is also compatible with Microsoft's Common Object Model (COM) scheme, whereby applications can register a library or an executable that provides a general interface to other applications in the system. Any application can instantiate a COM object without knowing many details about its behavior or requirements. There exists a heap memory corruption vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer. The vulnerability is caused due to an improper instantiation of a COM object which can lead to memory corruption in the application. An attacker may leverage the vulnerability by enticing the target user to follow a malicious link to a crafted HTML page. In case of a simple attack, the affected Internet Explorer application will be terminated abnormally when the malicious page is opened, when the user navigates to a different page, or when the user closes the browser. In case of a sophisticated attack, where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the system is dependent on the nature of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the currently logged in user.
