Vulnerability Description | Microsoft Windows DHCP Client service is a client side implementation of the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), which allows remote and automated management of network settings of operating systems. The DHCP Client Service is distributed with all versions of the Windows operating system and is required for automatic assignment of network IP and other settings to operate. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the DHCP client component of Microsoft Windows. The flaw is caused by the improper processing of crafted DHCP response messages. A remote attacker may leverage this vulnerability by sending a crafted DHCP response to the affected service, resulting in the possible injection and execution of arbitrary code on the target system. Any injected code would be executed within the security context of the System user. In the case of an attack, where code injection is unsuccessful the behaviour may be dependent on the version of the operating system. In some cases, upon bootup, the system will fail to complete the startup procedure and hang indefinitely. In other cases where the attack is carried out during normal system operation, the vulnerable service may be shut down. The host in this case will lack a proper network setup and will be unable to access the network. In the last behaviour case, the vulnerable component may shut down the operating system and consequently reboot the host within 60 seconds. In the case where code injection is successful, the behaviour of the system is entirely dependent on the nature of the injected code. Any code executed will run with the the security privileges of the vulnerable service, normally System. |
