Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The ProFTPD server is a full featured File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server mainly used in Linux distributions. Aside from the standard FTP features, the server supports a number of extensions. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in ProFTPD FTP server. The vulnerability is due to improper boundary checks in the SReplace function. A remote authenticated user can exploit the vulnerability by sending specially crafted commands to the FTP server. Exploitation may cause memory corruption, which in turn may result in injection and execution of arbitrary code. If the attack is not successful in code injection and execution, the instance of the target ProFTPD server process will terminate upon exploitation. This will result in termination of the connection on which the attack attempt has been made. The FTP service, however, will remain responsive and will continue to operate normally as it. This is due to the fact that for each new connection a new instance of the process is forked to handle the session. If an attack results in successful code injection and its subsequent execution, the behaviour of the target host will depend on the intention of the attacker. Note that any code execution will be within the security context of the affected service, normally a non-privileged user.
