Vulnerability Description | Microsoft Word is a document authoring product released by the Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft Word is available packaged with the Microsoft Office suite, as well as in form of a standalone product. Its native file format is the Word Document, normally identified by the .doc file extension. A Word Document has numerous properties which define the appearance of the document, as well as some more advanced properties for document objects, such as URLs, embedded images, and so on. A stack buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the way Microsoft Word processes files. The vulnerability is a result of insufficient boundary checking while processing the WordDocument (or Main) stream. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing the target user to open a crafted Word file, potentially causing arbitrary code to be injected and executed in the security context of the current user. An attack targeting this vulnerability can result in the injection and execution of code. If code execution is successful, the behaviour of the target will depend on the intention of the attacker. Any code injected will be executed within the security context of the currently logged in user. In an attack case where code execution was unsuccessful, Word would terminate resulting in the loss of any unsaved data from the current session. |
