Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup products offer data protection for distributed servers, clients, databases and applications. They provide centralized control over a series of distributed operations including Backup and Restore, Data Migration, and Threat Management. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in CA BrightStor ARCserve Media Server. The vulnerability is due to an insufficient boundary checking when processing crafted strings supplied in SUN RPC requests. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is not successful, the target Media Server service will terminate upon exploitation. The service needs to be restarted manually to restore the functionality of the server. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the target host will depend on the intention of the malicious code. Any code execution will be within the security context of the affected application, commonly System.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup Media Server SUN-RPC Service Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
