Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Serv-U FTP Server is developed by Rhino Software. It is a widely-used FTP server that includes enterprise-grade features such as SSL support, ODBC and Windows NT/SAM user account management, virtual directories, compression etc. By default configuration, Serv-U FTP Server listens on 21/TCP for incoming FTP request. There exists a directory traversal vulnerability in the Rhino Software Serv-U FTP Server. The vulnerability is due to an input validation error in server that does not properly sanitize the RNTO command. Successful exploitation allows authenticated remote attackers to write arbitrary files to any location on the vulnerable server. In a successful attack scenario, the attacker can overwrite any file in the target server, this can cause a denial of service condition or allow to run arbitrary command on the target.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Rhino Software Serv-U FTP Server RNTO Command Directory Traversal protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
