Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft DirectShow is used for streaming media on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is used for high-quality capture and playback of multimedia streams. The vulnerability is due to an error in the Microsoft DirectShow component that fails to properly validate certain values when updating a pointer. An attacker can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system via a malicious QuickTime media file. Successful exploitation may allow the attacker to take complete control of a target system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed QuickTime files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft DirectShow Pointer Validation Remote Code Execution (MS09-028) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
