Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Portable Document Format (PDF) is an open file format created by Adobe Systems. It is used for representing two-dimensional documents in a device and resolution independent fixed-layout document format. A vulnerability has been discovered in Adobe Reader. The vulnerability is due to several JavaScript methods of the Document Object that do not honor the Privileged Context and Safe Path settings. A remote attacker could trigger this issue via a specially crafted PDF file. Successful exploitation will allow the attacker to create arbitrary files and folders on a targeted file system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to transfer malformed PDF files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Adobe Reader DOC.Export Methods Arbitrary File Creation (APSB09-15) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
