Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Project is a project management software program designed to assist project managers to stay informed, keep project teams aligned, increase productivity and control project work, schedules, and finances. A remote code execution vulnerability has been identified in the way Microsoft Project handles specially crafted Project files. The vulnerability is due to an error in Microsoft Office Project that fails to properly validate memory resource allocations when opening Project files. An attacker can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system via a specially crafted Project file.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed Microsoft Office Project files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Office Project Memory Validation Remote Code Execution (MS09-074) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
