Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Windows Metafile Format (WMF) is a proprietary standard for representing graphical objects, mainly vector based graphic. WMF is capable of representing drawing lines, polygons, curves, and fonts. A vulnerability has been discovered in the Graphics Rendering Engine (GRE) component of Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability is due to the way that WMF handles certain drawing functions. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to browse a malicious web site with specially crafted content. An attack can lead to the injection and execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the currently logged in user. In an attack where code injection was successful, the behaviour of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft WMF File Polypolygon Function Buffer Overflow (MS06-026) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
