Vulnerability Description | Apache HTTP server can accept an HTTP request that contains multiple header fields. A vulnerability exists in the Apache HTTP Server 2.0. The vulnerable software contains a bug that can be exploited while receiving an HTTP request with arbitrary long MIME header lines from a malicious attacker. This vulnerability can be exploited to launch denial of service attacks on vulnerable HTTP servers. Upon receiving a specially crafted HTTP request header, a buffer overflow may occur in the vulnerable Apache HTTP server. Without boundary checks, this leads to memory exhaustion on a typical 32-bit operating system. When the attacked target is unable to allocate any more memory after all the available memory has been exhausted, the server is then unable to respond any other HTTP requests. On a 64-bit operating system with a large amount of virtual memory available, the same exploit will trigger an integer overflow vulnerability in the vulnerable Apache HTTP server. A heap memory buffer will be overflowed, and the current process will be terminated. In the case of a possible code execution, the actual behaviour will depend on the actual shell code embedded in the exploit. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
