Vulnerability Description | Ares Galaxy is an open source peer to peer file sharing application that uses its own decentralized supernode network. The latest versions also support the BitTorrent protocol. The use of Ares Galaxy may circumvent the organizational security policy. There are cases in which certain traffic, although not intended for malicious use, is very unsafe, since it may transfer shellcode which is undetectable by IPS. |
This protection will detect and block the access to the Ares Galaxy proprietary P2P network by identifying Ares Galaxy fingerprints. It will detect and block client connections to the Ares network - as well as search traffic, new Ares downloads, and other traffic. In some cases, existing downloads will continue to run. This protection is able to detect peer to peer traffic regardless of the TCP/UDP port that is being used to initiate the peer to peer session.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
