Vulnerability Description | Mozilla Firefox is a web browser developed by Mozilla Foundation. The browser is capable of interpreting and rendering many types of content published on the Internet, including various versions of HTML, XML, XUL, JavaScript, various graphics formats, and so on. The browser runs on the Windows, Macintosh, Unix and Linux based platforms. The Mozilla web browser accepts URIs using many protocols. A URI consists of a scheme name, followed by a resource path or indicator. There exists a vulnerability in the way products based on the Mozilla web engine validate URIs using the shell scheme. Using a specially crafted shell URI, an attacker can run executable files located on a target system, or start applications registered to handle certain file types. This vulnerability can also be used as a remote attack vector to vulnerabilities that would otherwise be considered local only. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of a target is dependent on the intended purpose if the injected. |
