Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The Portable Network Graphics (PNG) specification defines a datastream and an associated file format that provides a lossless, portable, image compression. libpng is a open source implementation of the PNG specification. A vulnerability exists in the way libpng handles the transparency chunk of a PNG image. A logic error in the process makes it possible to bypass a length check in the validation process. This error can cause a memory buffer on the stack to be overflowed. It is possible to exploit this vulnerability is such a way as to gain control of the process and execute injected code. In a simple attack case, when a vulnerable product opens the specially crafted PNG file, it will terminate from a memory access violation, creating a denial of service condition. In the case of a successful code execution, the actual behavior will depend on the injected code. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
