Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | The Microsoft Office text editing tools support a number of foreign file formats for compatibility with third party software. The foreign file format support is based on import and export converters. When a text editor needs to read a foreign format file, a converter transforms the file to an Office specific format. When a text editor needs to write the document file in a foreign format, the converter transforms the Office specific format to the format of the third party application. A vulnerability exists in the WordPerfect 5.x converter module used by several Microsoft products. The vulnerability is triggered by a WordPerfect document with an overly long length field. This vulnerability could permit an attacker to inject and execute code on a remote system with the security context of the current user. In a simple attack against this vulnerability, the application that uses the vulnerable data converter will terminate on a memory access violation error. In most cases the "Program error" popup dialog will be displayed saying that the application has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. However, depending on the actual error and the application targeted, the application may terminate without user notification. In case of a more sophisticated attack against this vulnerability, arbitrary code may be injected into the application and executed. In this case, the behavior of the attack target will depend on the nature of the injected code. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
