Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Clam AntiVirus is an open source product that provides anti-virus scanning utilities and an anti-virus library. The product is capable of decoding several file formats in order to be able to scan them for viruses. One of such formats is the Microsoft compiled help files, as known as CHM. There exists an integer overflow vulnerability in Clam Antivirus. The vulnerability is caused by a failure in handling an error when parsing CHM files, resulting in heap corruption. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability using a malicious email that contains a specially crafted CHM file. This results in denial of service or execution of arbitrary code in the context of the running antivirus software. In case of an attack where code injection is not successful, the affected application that uses ClamAV library to parse the CHM file will terminate. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the system is dependent on the intended purpose of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the affected application. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
