Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description There exists a code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability is created by unrestricted access to GDI functions through WMF files. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to supply and execute arbitrary code through calling a specific GDI function via a crafted WMF file. An attack targeting this vulnerability can result in the injection and execution of code. If code execution is successful, the behavior of the target will depend on the intention of the attacker. In an attack case where code execution is unsuccessful, the application that opens the malicious file will terminate abnormally, might resulting in the loss of any unsaved data from the current session.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows WMF Handling Arbitrary Code Execution protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
