Vulnerability Description | Microsoft Windows Media Player is an application that is used to play various media files, such as those compressed with AVI, MP3, MPG formats and so on. Windows Media Player runs on Microsoft Windows platforms, including Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Windows Media Player provides a plug-in for use by external browsers and applications to display resources that are handled by Windows Media Player. There exists a buffer overflow vulnerability in the Windows Media Player Plug-in when it is used with various non-Microsoft browsers. The vulnerability exists due to a failure to check the boundaries of resource information provided to the plug-in. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the target host in the context of the user running the browser. In case of an attack where code injection is not successful, the affected application will terminate. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the system is dependent on the intended purpose of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the currently logged in user. |
