Vulnerability Description | A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the way Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook process TNEF encoded messages. When the TNEF decoder used by these products processes a TNEF object record with a large size value, an integer overflow can occur. An attacker potentially can exploit this vulnerability for code execution by sending a specially crafted email to a target server or email account. In a simple attack case, where the heap is corrupted with arbitrary values, the process of the affected program will terminate. In the case of the server component, the server functionality will stop. The service will be unavailable until such time as it is manually restarted. In a attack where the attacker is able to inject and execute arbitrary code on the target host, the behavior of the target system is dependent on the intention of the injected code. Any code injected into Exchange Server will be executed with System privileges, whereas code injected into Outlook will be be executed as the currently logged into user. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
