Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description ClamAV AntiVirus is an open source product that provides anti-virus scanning utilities and an anti-virus library. The program implements extensive logging facilities that are used to record significant events either to a separate log file or using the system logging facility. A format string vulnerability has been reported in Clam AntiVirus. The vulnerability is supposedly a result of improper use of the syslog function in the code. It is reported that this vulnerability may be leveraged to inject and execute arbitrary code on the target host. The release versions of ClamAV that were reported vulnerable were found not to be affected by any format string vulnerabilities in the relevant source code file.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the ClamAV Output Log Handling Format String protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Security Products Enforcement Violation.
Attack Information:  ClamAV output log handling format string
