Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | GNU gzip is a popular compression and decompression utility that ships with all standard Linux distributions, as well as commercial Unix-based operating systems. The utility can create and decompress files which are stored using the DEFLATE algorithm. In addition to the algorithm used in the archives, the application is capable of decompressing archives created with other programs. There exists an array indexing error vulnerability in the GNU gzip application. The flaw is due to an improper boundary checks when decompressing LZH archives. An attacker may leverage this vulnerability to cause the affected product to terminate unexpectedly and potentially execute arbitrary code on the target system. In case of an attack where code injection is not successful, the affected application will terminate abnormally. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security context of the current user. The risk of an attack resulting in successful exploitation is increased on 64 bit systems. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
