Vulnerability Description | Linux is a popular open-source operating system in which the kernel and other programs related to the operating systems are developed by a group of volunteers. The Linux kernel supports a great number of features, including networking, file system and graphics protocols and standards. Along with established and mature standards, the operating systems supports a large number of new and experimental protocols, such as IPv6, SCTP, DCCP, and so on. There exists a remote denial of service vulnerability in the Linux Kernel. The vulnerability occurs due to insufficient checks during the processing of SCTP packets by the netfilter module. By sending a crafted SCTP packet to a target host, an attacker may exploit this vulnerability to shut down a vulnerable host, thus creating a system wide denial of service condition. Exploiting this vulnerability successfully will cause a kernel panic condition on the target system. The kernel will log a panic message on the system console containing debug information pertaining to the panic condition which includes the call trace, register values and so on. The target host must be restarted to resume its functionality. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
