Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Apple QuickTime is a multimedia player that supports a wide range of media formats. The software supports parsing and displaying picture files as well as numerous video formats. QuickTime is capable of processing the Apple QuickTime movie file format, which is a proprietary format created by Apple Computer, Inc. A vulnerability exists in the Apple QuickTime product which may allow for cross zone scripting attacks. The flaw exists in the processing of MOV media files. A malicious user may exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code or access local resources by enticing a remote user to open a malicious file. In case of an attack where code injection and execution is successful, the behavior of the target host is dependent on the intended purpose of the injected code delivered in the MOV document. The malicious script can bypass the Internet zone restriction and will be able to execute within the security context of the currently logged on user.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Apple QuickTime MOV File HREFTrack Cross-Zone Scripting protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
