Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup products offer data protection for distributed servers, clients, databases and applications. They provide centralized control over a series of distributed operations including Backup and Restore, Data Migration, and Threat Management. There exists a denial of service vulnerability in CA BrightStor ARCserve Media Server. The vulnerability is due to insufficient boundary checking when processing crafted strings supplied in SUN RPC requests. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to terminate the affected service, causing denial of service condition. The target Media Server service will terminate upon triggering the vulnerability. The service needs to be restarted manually to restore the functionality of the server.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup Media Server SUN RPC Denial of Service protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
