Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Java Technology is a programming platform developed by Sun Microsystems which aims to provide a system for developing and deploying cross-platform applications. Java is widely used for web applications in numerous forms, one of which are Java Applets. The Java Development Kit (JDK) is a Sun Microsystems Java package product aimed for developers. The JDK also comes with a complete Java Run-time Environment (JRE) as well as Java compiler that converts the source code into Java byte-code. The Java Run-time Environment, JRE, consists of a Java Virtual Machine and all of the class libraries that will be present in the production environment. An integer overflow vulnerability exists in the way Sun JDK image parser handles JPG files. The vulnerability is due to improper checking of the ICC profile data when parsing JPG files. A remote attacker may leverage this vulnerability to inject and execute arbitrary code on the target host. In an attack case where code injection is not successful, the application that runs as the Java applet container (usually the web browser) will terminate abnormally. In a more sophisticated attack where code injection is successful, the behavior of the target host is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security context of the currently logged in user.
