Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Samba is an open-source implementation of the file, print, and other network services suite known as SMB/CIFS (Server Message Block/Common Internet File System). There is a buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the NMBD service of Samba. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error while processing specially crafted SAM LOGON requests when Samba is configured as a Primary or Backup Domain Controller. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable system in the context of the affected process. If code injection attack is successful, the behaviour of the target is entirely dependent on the intended function of the injected code. The code in such a case would execute within the security of the affected process, commonly the root user. In an attack case where code injection is not successful, the nmbd process will terminate, creating a denial of service condition.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Samba Domain Controller Service Crafted Mailslot Name Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
