Who is Vulnerable? | |
Vulnerability Description | Firebird (sometimes called FirebirdSQL) is a relational database management system offering many ANSI SQL-2003 features. It runs on Linux, Windows, and a variety of Unix platforms. Started as a fork of Borland's open source release of InterBase, the Firebird codebase is maintained by the Firebird Project at SourceForge. There exits a buffer overflow vulnerability in Firebird database server product. The flaw is due to a boundary error when handling overly long username string in received messages. A remote unauthenticated attacker may exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted messages to the target server. Successful attack may allow for arbitrary code injection and execution with privileges of the affected service. In a simple attack case aimed at creating a denial of service condition, the affected process will terminate. In a sophisticated attack scenario where the attacker is successful in injecting and executing supplied code, the behaviour of the system is dependent on the nature of the injected code. Any code injected into the vulnerable component would execute in the security context of the service process. |
This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.
