Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Visio is a diagramming application that is part of the Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft Office is a popular productivity application suite released by Microsoft Corporation. It includes a word processor, a spreadsheet application, a presentation editor, and a number of other applications and components. A remote code-execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft Visio. The vulnerability is due to incorrectly handling the object header in a crafted Microsoft Visio file. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing the target user to open a malicious Microsoft Visio file, potentially causing arbitrary code to be injected and executed in the security context of the current user. An attack targeting this vulnerability can result in the injection and execution of code. If code execution is successful, the behavior of the target will depend on the intention of the attacker. Any code injected will be executed within the security context of the currently logged in user. In the case of an unsuccessful code execution attack, Microsoft Visio will terminate resulting in the loss of any unsaved data from the current session.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Visio Object Header Buffer Overflow (MS08-019) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
