Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The rpc.pcnfsd daemon handles requests from PC-NFS clients for authentication services on remote machines. These services include authentication for mounting and for print spooling. An integer overflow vulnerability was reported in the rpc.pcnfsd service within the several systems. The vulnerability resides within a log function of the rpc.pcnfsd service. This can be exploited to cause an integer overflow via a specially crafted RPC request. Successful exploitation of this issue could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on an affected system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malformed RPC requests.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70 / R65

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Multiple Vendors rpc.pcnfsd Syslog Format String Remote Code Execution protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
