Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Novell Netware is a network operating system developed by Novell. It provides file sharing and other services such as printing and email. Netware FTP Server software supplies service for transferring files to and from Netware volumes. File transfers can be performed using any FTP client. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in Novell Netware. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error in NWFTPD.nlm when processing the MKD and RMD FTP commands. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending maliciously crafted commands to the affected server. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to the execution of arbitrary commands on a target server.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Novell Netware FTP Server Remote Stack Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  FTP Enforcement Violation.
