Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description QuickTime is a media player application developed by Apple. It is capable of playing back numerous multimedia file formats from local file system or network servers. One of the media formats supported by Apple QuickTime is SMIL. A stack buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Apple QuickTime media player. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error in the QuickTimeStreaming.qtx file while writing a debug log error. Remote attackers could exploit this vulnerability by enticing target users to open a crafted SMIL file containing an overly long URL. Successful exploitation would result in arbitrary code injection and execution with the privileges of the logged in user. In case of an unsuccessful exploit, the application would terminate abnormally.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Apple QuickTime Streaming Debug Error Logging Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Content Protection Violation.
