Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description OpenOffice.org is an open source office suite that includes a word processor, a spreadsheet application, a presentation creator, an illustration drawer, a desktop database, and an equation editor. The product is made available for multiple platforms and languages. An integer underflow vulnerability has been reported in OpenOffice. The vulnerability is due to an error processes sprm records in Microsoft Word files. A remote attacker could leverage this issue by enticing a target user to open a malicious Microsoft Word file with a vulnerable version of the application. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in a heap overflow leading to the possibility of code execution within the security context of the currently logged on user and may cause the target application to terminate abnormally.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed Word files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the OpenOffice.org Microsoft Word File Processing Integer Underflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
