Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Apple QuickTime is a multimedia player that supports a wide range of media formats. The software supports the parsing and displaying of image files as well as numerous audio/video formats. One of the image file formats supported by QuickTime is the FlashPix format. FlashPix is a bitmapped computer graphics file format where the image is saved in more than one resolution. An integer overflow vulnerability has been reported in Apple QuickTime. The vulnerability is due to an error in QuickTime when handling FlashPix encoded movie files. This issue may be exploited by remote attackers by enticing a user to view specially crafted FlashPix files. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the currently logged in user and may lead to abnormal termination of the vulnerable program.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed FPX files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Apple QuickTime FlashPix Movie File Integer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Content Protection Violation.
