Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Novell ZENworks Configuration Management is an IT desktop computer management suite that is based on a client/server architecture. A management server collects and sends data of managed assets by communicating with client applications installed on computers, or via other management protocols. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in Novell ZENworks Configuration Management. The flaw is due to an input validation error in the Preboot Service when processing messages sent to port TCP/998. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable system. Successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary code execution on a target system within the security context of the affected service and may cause the service to terminate abnormally.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R81 / R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Novell ZENworks Configuration Management Preboot Service Code Execution protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
