Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description The Microsoft Foundation Class Library (MFC) is a library that wraps portions of the Windows API in C++ classes, including functionality that enables them to use a default application framework. A stack buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Windows MFC library mfc42.dll. The vulnerability is due to a boundary error while handling crafted archive files. This issue can be exploited via a 3rd party application, such as PowerZip, that utilizes the affected library. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by enticing target users to open a malicious archive file in an application that uses the affected MFC library. Successful exploitation would result in arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the logged on user.

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows MFC Document Title Updating Buffer Overflow (MS10-074) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
