Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description PostgreSQL is a popular open source relational database management system. It supports the SQL (Structured Query Language) database query language and allows remote network connections from client applications over the proprietary PostgreSQL network communication protocol. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in the PostgreSQL database server. The vulnerability is due to an error when executing the SQL substring function with malicious input. A remote attacker could leverage this vulnerability by sending a crafted SQL query to a target server. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could result in execution of arbitrary code on the target server.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the PostgreSQL Bit Substring Buffer Overflow protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.
