Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description Microsoft Excel is a popular spreadsheet application. The application can create complex spreadsheets with multiple workbooks, formulas, and various data sources. The common extension used for Microsoft Excel documents is .xls. A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Excel. The vulnerability is caused by an improper sanitization of a Unicode string in Excel spreadsheet files. A remote attacker may exploit this issue by enticing a user to open a crafted Excel file. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed Excel files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75 / R71 / R70

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Excel Crafted URL Unicode Buffer Overflow (MS06-050) protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:

Attack Name:  Content Protection Violation.
