Who is Vulnerable?
Vulnerability Description An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to open a crafted PNG file, resulting in the possible injection and execution of arbitrary code on the target system with the privileges of the currently logged-in user. A remote stack buffer overflow vulnerability has been discovered in Microsoft Windows Media Player. The flaw is caused due to an improper parsing of chunk fields in Portable Network Graphics (PNG) files. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to open a crafted PNG file, resulting in the possible injection and execution of an arbitrary code. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could cause the code executed to be within the privileges of the currently logged in user.

Protection Overview

This protection will detect and block malformed PNG files.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway product to the latest IPS update. For information on how to update IPS, go to SBP-2006-05, click on Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

Security Gateway R80 / R77 / R75

  1. In the IPS tab, click Protections and find the Microsoft Windows Media Player PNG Chunk Handling Stack Overflow (MS06-024) - High Confidence protection using the Search tool and Edit the protection's settings.
  2. Install policy on all Security Gateways.

This protection's log will contain the following information:
